The host team reigned on top of the overall medal tally with 17 golds, 22 silvers and 25 bronzes, followed by China who won 13 gold, five silver and five bronze medals. Singapore managed to claim two silvers, while Chinese Taipei brought home a solitary bronze.
Hoang Nhat Minh was among the most prominent Vietnamese players during the five-day tournament, sweeping all the three gold medals (standard, blitz and rapid) of the boys’ under-8 age group. Minh’s teammate, Dinh Tran Thanh Lam, achieved the same feat in the girls’ under-10 age division.
Kieu Bich Thuy and Phan Huy Hoang each scored double golds for Vietnam in the girls’ under-20 and boys’ under-10 age groups, respectively.

For the first time ever, Vietnam overcame the xiangqi powerhouse of China in the boys’ under-14 division, as Phan Nguyen Cong Minh won six points, beating the Chinese runner-up, Hua Chen Hao, by only half a point.
The tournament took place in Quang Ninh province from December 16 to 20, drawing the participation of more than 110 players from eight countries and territories across Asia. Contestants battled it out for medals in the standard, blitz and rapid chess categories of six different age groups: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U20.
