In early July, Vietnamese lychees made their debut at Costco, the largest retail chain in the US, as reported by the Viet Nam Trade Office in San Francisco.

The fruit is imported and distributed by Dragonberry Produce, a leading premium produce importer in the US market.

Prior to export, the lychees undergo irradiation treatment in Viet Nam to meet the stringent plant quarantine requirements set by US authorities. They are then shipped by sea to preserve freshness and ensure adherence to safety standards.

This marks the third consecutive year that Dragonberry Produce has introduced Vietnamese lychees to American consumers.

Given the intense competition in the international fruit market—particularly from other Asian nations—this achievement underscores the high quality of Viet Nam’s agricultural products.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Agency of Foreign Trade, the global lychee market is projected to experience robust growth, with an estimated value of 8.79 billion USD by 2028. This expansion is driven by increasing international demand and scaled-up production across Asia.

China remains the world's largest lychee producer and exporter, with an annual output of approximately two million tonnes. Other major producers include India, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, all playing vital roles in the regional and global supply chain.

The presence of Vietnamese lychees at a prominent retailer like Costco not only marks a commercial milestone but also serves as a testament to the effectiveness of a well-coordinated supply chain between exporters and manufacturers. Dragonberry Produce has worked closely with Vietnamese cooperatives and enterprises to standardise production processes and uphold stringent quality control measures.

Looking ahead, the company plans to diversify its imports to include other Vietnamese fruits such as longan, dragon fruit, and passion fruit—further strengthening the country’s footprint in the global fresh fruit market.
