According to the latest rankings released by FIFA on December 22, the Viet Nam men’s national football team has climbed three places to 107th in the world, marking a positive improvement in its position following recent encouraging results.

Specifically, Viet Nam is currently ranked 107th globally, 19th in Asia, and second in Southeast Asia, with 1,189.51 points. Compared with the November rankings, the team has climbed three places worldwide and one place in Asia. This is also Viet Nam’s national football team highest ranking this year.

According to calculations by FIFA, in the December ranking period, Viet Nam had only one official match counted — a 2–0 victory over Laos in the penultimate round of the Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, played on November 19. This result earned Viet Nam an additional 5.89 points, helping the team move ahead of Niger, Lebanon, and Comoros.

Lebanon lost points after a defeat to Sudan in the FIFA Arab Cup Qualifiers, meanwhile Comoros, despite advancing from the qualifiers, lost all three group-stage matches against Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, leading to a significant drop in total points.

Notably, FIFA rated Viet Nam as the national team with the highest rise in the December rankings, even though Singapore also climbed three places following a win over Hong Kong (China) in the Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers. However, due to its higher overall ranking, Viet Nam was placed above Singapore in terms of teams making gains.

In contrast, Malaysia recorded the sharpest fall in the region, dropping five places from 116th to 121st in the world after FIFA ruled three friendly matches as losses due to the fielding of ineligible naturalised players.

At the Asian level, the top three teams remain unchanged: Japan (18th in the world), Iran (20th), and the Republic of Korea (22nd). Globally, the Top 10 also remains the same, with Spain continuing to lead, followed by Argentina, France, England, and Brazil.

The FIFA rankings is an important basis for determining seedings at major tournaments such as the World Cup, Asian Cup, ASEAN Cup, as well as new competitions in the FIFA and AFC systems. Viet Nam’s highest ranking in history was 84th in the world, achieved in September 1998.

According to the schedule, Viet Nam’s next official match will be against Malaysia in the final round of the Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, which is scheduled to take place on March 31, 2026.
