May 20-26: PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc pays official visit to Russia, Norway, Sweden

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc pays official visit to Russia, Norway, Sweden

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse, along with a high-ranking delegation of the Government of Vietnam, paid official visits to Russia from May 20-23, the Kingdom of Norway from May 24-26, and the Kingdom of Sweden from May 26-28.

The visits are being made at the respective invitations of Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev, Norwegian PM Erna Solberg and Swedish PM Stefan Löfven.

During his stay in Russia, he had talks and meetings with Russian leaders, presided over a ceremony to launch the Vietnam – Russia Year and attended the Vietnam – Russia Business Forum, as well as received representatives of Russia’s major firms, and met with representatives of the Russian veterans who took part in the war in Vietnam and the Russia – Vietnam Friendship Association. He also visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia and Saint Petersburg city, among other activities.

During the time in Norway, PM Phuc held talks and met a number of Norwegian leaders, attended the Vietnam – Norway business forum, and visited and received leading officials of Norway’s major groups.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc arrived in Stockholm on May 26, starting their official visit to Sweden.

14th National Assembly convenes seventh session

The 14th National Assembly (NA) opened its 7th session in Hanoi, spending 12 working days for law building, two and a half days on Question & Answer activities, and the remaining time on socio-economic issues, the State budget, supervision work and other matters

The lawmakers are scheduled to consider and pass seven bills and two resolutions, and debate nine other draft laws as well as consider and adopt a resolution approving the joining of the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 98 concerning the Application of the Principles of the Right to Organise and to Bargain Collectively.

January-May foreign investment pledges hit four-year record

The manufacturing sector attracted US$12 billion in FDI pledges.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) pledges to Vietnam in the first five months of 2019 reached US$16.74 billion, the highest figure in the last four years.

Data as of May 25th showed it was up 69.1% compared with the same period from 2018.

During the January-May period, 1,363 new projects worth US$6.46 billion were granted investment licenses while US$2.63 billion were pledged to 505 existing projects.

A touching C-section for pregnant woman with terminal cancer

Diagnosed with breast cancer at 12 weeks of pregnancy, Nguyen Thi L. (28 years old, from Ly Nhan district, Ha Nam province) was still determined to remain healthy to give birth to her child.

The C-section to deliver the baby at week 31 was successful, with the tears of the doctors and L.’s family.

The surgery was also extremely rare as doctors had to perform surgery to deliver the baby when the mother was in a sitting position, making it extremely difficult to perform a C-section. As the patient’s health was weakened, the operation was truly a great challenge to the team of 20 doctors.

Nhan Dan Newspaper national table tennis tourney takes place in Khanh Hoa

The tourney brought together 148 players from 14 teams across the country.

The 37th Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championship 2019 took place in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province from May 20-26, bringing together 148 players from 14 teams.

The organising board presented 28 sets of medals in the singles, doubles and team events for both men and women, as well as the mixed doubles category.

Dinh Hoang Anh and Tran Mai Ngoc from Hanoi T&T was awarded the best young male and female player titles.

ASEAN Music Festival 2019 kicks off in Hai Phong

The ASEAN Music Festival 2019 was opened in Hai Phong, featuring the participation of over 160 artists from Vietnam and six other ASEAN countries including Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

The organising board will award gold and silver medals to the outstanding individuals and troupes and present trophies and souvenir flags to the participants.

Hanoi continues to promote its images on CNN

The US Cable News Network (CNN) and Hanoi signed the MoU on a Media Partnership Promoting Hanoi on CNN International in the 2019-2024 period.

In 2019, under the theme "Hanoi open to you," CNN will introduce Hanoi as a destination attracting tourists through its culture, history, heritage and people.

With the theme "Hanoi: Ready to depart" in 2010, CNN will continue to promote images of Hanoi associated with the first ever organisation of the F1 race in the country.

In the next three years, audiences will be informed of Hanoi as a host of regional and world sports events, a centre of innovation and a city of the future.
