NA Standing Committee convenes 38th meeting
The National Assembly Standing Committee convened for the 38th meeting from October 14-17, with several draft laws and important reports on its agenda.
During the meeting, the law-makers discussed three draft laws, including the revised Law on Enterprises, the revised Investment Law, and the law on amendments and supplements to a number of articles of the Law on Management and Use of Weapons, Explosives and Supporting Tools. They also discussed a draft resolution on piloting the removal of ward-level People’s Councils in Hanoi’s urban districts and towns.
They also gave opinions on reports of socio-economic and State budget performance, the feasibility research report of the Long Thanh airport (first phase), a draft resolution approving the Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of the National Boundary and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty between Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Protocol on the Demarcation and Marker Planting of the Land Boundary between Vietnam and Cambodia.
Reports on voters’ petitions and the settlement of complaints and denunciation in 2019, as well as on preparations for the 8th session of the NA, were also considered.
Conference reviews 10 years of new-style countryside building programme

A national conference was held under the chair of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in the northern province of Nam Dinh on October 19 to review 10 years implementing the national target programme on new-style rural areas.
At its seventh session, in August 2008, the 10th-tenure Party Central Committee issued Resolution No. 26 on agriculture, farmers and rural areas.
Thanks to the efforts of the whole political system and society, great achievements have been obtained over the past decade. Notably, the new-style countryside building target has been reached almost two years ahead of schedule. As of October 2019, 4,665 communes, or 52.4% of the total nationwide, have been recognised as new-style rural areas, 2.4% higher than the target set for 2020. Among them, 63 communes have satisfied advanced criteria.
Vietnam attends first India-CLMV Reverse Buyer Seller Meet
A delegation of 25 Vietnamese businesses attended the first India-CLMV Reverse Buyer Seller Meet in Chennai City, the capital city of India’s state of Tamil Nadu, on October 16.
Held under the theme “Build economic integration through regional value chains” by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the event brought together nearly 300 delegates from India and the four ASEAN countries.
The Vietnamese representatives briefed the meeting on outcomes of cooperation between Vietnam and India and CLM countries in such spheres as economy, trade, investment and tourism.
Vietnam’s universities progress in world rankings
The Vietnam National University (Hanoi) has been ranked 401-500 among the world's 1,008 best universities in terms of engineering and technology, as revealed by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject – The WUR by subject 2020.
Vietnam has three universities named in the rankings, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (301-400), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (401-500) and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (601-800).
The rankings feature the universities that are leading across the subjects of general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering and chemical engineering.
Vietnam hosts Committee on Earth Observation Satellites Plenary
Overview of the opening session
The 33rd Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Plenary opened in Hanoi on October 15.
This year’s event, hosted by the Vietnam National Space Centre (VNSC) and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), attracted the participation of 30 member organisations, from Japan, China, France, the UK, the US, Australia, Italy, Switzerland and Canada, among others.
The meeting aimed to discuss and make decisions on activities, plans and strategies of the CEOS for the 2019-2021 period; to evaluate two initiatives proposed by Vietnam in the 2018-2019 term; and to develop multilateral cooperation tasks on regional and global scales.
Van Don International Airport named as Asia’s Leading New Airport 2019
Van Don International Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh has been named “Asia’s Leading New Airport 2019” at the World Travel Awards Asia & Oceania (WTA), becoming the first Vietnamese airport to be honoured with this prestigious award.
The award affirms the prestige, position and high-quality services of the airport, while serving as motivation for the staff to continue improving services and bringing customers the best airport experience.
Van Don International Airport was developed to the tune of VND7.463 trillion (US$323 million) in total investment by Sun Group. Construction on the airport started in 2015 on 288 ha in Doan Ket Commune, Van Don District. It is the first airport in Vietnam to operate under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.
Vietnam among top 20 countries to visit in 2020

Vietnam was ranked 10th among the top 20 countries to visit in 2020 by Conde Nast Traveler – a prestigious travel magazine.
Many other Southeast Asian countries were included in the list, with Indonesia taking the first position, followed by Thailand.
The results were based on the choices of more than 600,000 readers across the globe submitting their responses and rating their recent travel experiences of the world’s countries, cities, islands, hotels, resorts, cruise lines, airlines and airports.
Vietnam welcomed 12.9 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of 2019, a year-on-year rise of 10.8%, according to the General Statistics Office.
World Cup qualifiers: Vietnam third among second-placed teams after three matches
The away victory against Indonesia on October 15 has solidified Vietnam’s chance to progress to the final round of the 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers, as Park Hang-seo’s side currently rank third among the eight second-placed teams.
Three goals, scored by Do Duy Manh, Que Ngoc Hai and Nguyen Tien Linh, earned the Golden Dragons a convincing 3-1 win at Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium in Bali on October 15, thus putting an end to their winless run on Indonesia’s home pitch in recent years while moving Park’s troops to third among the runner-up teams after the fourth matchday.
Vietnam have gained seven points and possess a goal difference of +3 after three games, placing them behind China and Jordan, who have better goal differences of +12 and +4, respectively, but above the DPR Korea ,who have the same goal difference of +3 but have scored one goal fewer.
