Spanning nearly 5,500 metres, the Vinh Thinh Bridge is the longest bridge crossing over the Red River. It has four lanes and allows speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour.

Construction of the bridge began in December 2011 and was completed seven months earlier than expected.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the opening of Vinh Thinh Bridge was significant to boosting economic links between Hanoi and the northwestern provinces.

He commended the Transport Ministry and relevant agencies, as well as workers and engineers, for their efforts to complete the excellent quality bridge ahead of schedule.

The Prime Minister also thanked the Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) for financing US$100 million of the US$137 million project.

He assured the Korean partner that Vietnam always valued its official development assistance and would utilise the funding effectively.

Construction work on Vinh Thinh Bridge was undertaken by GS Engineering & Construction Corp and Cienco 1, while design and construction management services were provided by the Yooshin - Sambo consortium.
