Cambodian People’s Party wins local council election

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has won the majority of the seats in Cambodia’s local council election for the fourth tenure, according to the results announced by the National Election Committee (NEC) on June 4.

The political parties participating in the election include the CPP, the Khmer Will Party, FUNCINPEC, the Nation Power Party, and the Khmer National United Party.

The results showed that the CPP won 504/559 capital and provincial seats, while the Khmer Will Party and the Nation Power Party gained 47 seats and 8 seats respectively.

Regarding the municipal and district results, the CPP won 3,257/3,641 seats, followed by the Khmer Will Party with 312 seats. The Nation Power Party, FUNCINPEC and the Khmer National United Party won 69 seats, 2 seats and 1 seat respectively.

According to the NEC, the voter turnout in the local council election on May 26 reached 99.79%.

On June 4, the CPP issued a statement recognising the results of the local council election — which it says clearly reflects the will of the Cambodian people.

The CPP affirmed that local councils under the CPP’s leadership will strive to serve the people.

The ruling party added that it will do their utmost to strengthen national solidarity, safeguard peace, political stability and public safety, uphold democracy and the rule of law, and improve the people’s standard of living.
