Cardiff City's Sala missing after plane disappears over English Channel

Cardiff City’s new soccer star Emiliano Sala was on board a light aircraft that disappeared en route to the Welsh capital where he was to join up with the team, France’s civil aviation authority said on Tuesday.

Argentine Sala was flying from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff when the plane lost radar contact off the English Channel island Guernsey late on Monday. Rescue aircraft and boats scoured more than 1,000 square miles of sea for the single-engine Piper Malibu on Tuesday.

* A ruthless Petra Kvitova trampled on the hopes of the host nation with an emphatic 6-1 6-4 defeat of Ashleigh Barty to reach her second Australian Open semi-final on Tuesday.

* Arsenal right back Hector Bellerin will be sidelined for six to nine months after sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury in Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win over Chelsea. Bellerin, who was making his first start after returning from a calf injury, went down clutching his knee while challenging for the ball in the second half and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

* Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo avoided jail on Tuesday but was ordered by a Spanish court to pay €3.57 million (US$4.1 million) for committing tax fraud when at Real Madrid, part of a broader €18.8-million payout. He was handed a two-year jail sentence immediately reduced to a fine of €365,000 and another penalty of €3.2 million, according to the sentence.

* Indian captain Virat Kohli capped a memorable 2018 season by becoming the first to win the International Cricket Council's (ICC) cricketer, test and one-day international (ODI) player of the year awards, the ICC said on Tuesday. Kohli, the top scorer in both tests and one-dayers in 2018, was also named captain of the ICC test and ODI teams of the year.

* Kevin-Prince Boateng acknowledged on Tuesday that he will not be a starter after his shock move to Barcelona, but he is determined to win everything with the Spanish champions. The 31-year-old Ghanaian forward sealed a sudden loan move from Serie A side Sassuolo on Monday for 1 million euros with the option to move permanently for 8 million in the summer.

* Sevilla's Munir El Haddadi suffered a muscular injury which will keep the striker out of both legs of the Copa del Rey quarter-final with his former side Barcelona, his coach Pablo Machin said on Tuesday. The Spanish 23-year-old moved to the Andalusian side earlier this month for 1 million euros (US$1.1 million) with just six months left on his Barcelona contract.

* Southampton have loaned centre back Wesley Hoedt to Celta Vigo for the rest of the season, the Spanish side said in a statement on Tuesday. The 24-year-old Dutchman has made 13 English Premier League appearances this season, but has not played for Southampton since Austrian Ralph Hasenhuettl replaced the sacked Mark Hughes as manager in December.

* Italy striker Mario Balotelli has agreed to join Olympique de Marseille from fellow Ligue 1 side Nice on a six-month contract, French sports daily L’Equipe reported on Tuesday. The newspaper added that the 28-year-old, who has also played for Inter and AC Milan as well as Manchester City and Liverpool, would have a medical on Wednesday.

* Tottenham Hotspur's England midfielder Dele Alli is expected to be out of action until March after suffering a hamstring injury in the Premier League on Sunday, the north Londoners said on Tuesday. Alli scored a second-half equaliser in the 2-1 win at Fulham but then went off injured in the closing stages.
