Chelsea name former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino as manager

Chelsea confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as manager on Monday (May 29) after the former Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain manager signed a two-year contract with the option of a further year.

Argentine Pochettino, 51, will take over from interim boss Frank Lampard on Jul 1. Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

* French favourite Caroline Garcia fought her way into the second round at Roland Garros by downing China's Wang Xiyu 7-6(4) 4-6 6-4 in a tense affair on Monday (May 29).

* Shang Juncheng missed out on becoming the first Chinese man in 86 years to win a match at the French Open on Monday (May 29) when he slipped to an agonising five-set defeat to Juan Pablo Varillas. The 18-year-old Shang, ranked 200 in the world and who had to come through qualifying in Paris, let slip a two-sets lead to lose 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

* Former French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova celebrated her return to Roland Garros with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Czech Linda Fruhvirtova on Monday and said she had feared for her career a year ago due to a knee problem.

* Sloane Stephens relished every moment she spent on her favourite court in the world as the she cruised to a 6-0 6-4 first-round victory over former world number one Karolina Pliskova on Monday to put down an early marker at the French Open.

* Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti has asked to take a break from the game and won't be in charge of the newly crowned Serie A champions next season, he said on Monday. Spalletti has just led Napoli to the Serie A title for the first time since 1990 but there has been speculation about whether he would stay on.

* Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has called for more investment in the club so they can challenge for trophies after the team finished third in the Premier League this season. United sealed the third place, finishing the season with 75 points, after they came from behind to defeat Fulham 2-1 in the last game of the league season on Sunday.

* Alpine took their first podium finish of the Formula One season in Monaco on Sunday and Chief Executive Laurent Rossi, who warned of the consequences of failure after poor opening results, said he was proud of the performance.

* France will host their home Six Nations rugby games away from Paris for the first time, tournament organisers said on Monday, announcing Marseille, Lille and Lyon as the new venues for next year's edition.

* Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has handed a first call-up to AZ Alkmaar midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and recalled giant goalkeeper Andries Noppert as he named a 26-man squad on Monday for the Nations League finals. There was no place for keeper Jasper Cillessen, who was also overlooked for the last European Championship and World Cup.
