NDO - President Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented the Independence Order, second class, to celebrated poet Huu Thinh at an art programme on May 8, honouring the former chairman of the Vietnamese Writers’ Association (VWA).

Huu Thinh was born in 1942 as Nguyen Huu Thinh, using the pen name Vu Huu. He has been a member of the VWA since 1976 and served as Chairman for four consecutive terms.

He was also a National Assembly deputy of the 10th and 11th tenures.

Huu Thinh has received various accolades throughout his writing career, including the A prize of the VWA in 1980, the ASEAN Literature in 1999 and the Ho Chi Minh Prize in Literature and Arts in 2012.

His works cover poems, narratives and literary criticism, the most notable of which are poems during the resistance war against the US and during the Doi Moi period.

The Independence Order was conferred in honour of his contributions to Vietnamese literature over the past 60 plus years.
