The third consecutive win helps Vietnam to consolidate their top spot in Pool A, thus avoiding facing the winner of Pool B, strong rivals Kuwait, in the promotion play-off scheduled at My Dinh Sports Complex on Saturday.

Both Vietnam and Malaysia won their first two meetings and were determined to win the final group match to top Pool A.

Trinh Linh Giang entered his first singles clash with Malaysian Chin Christian Didier and his superior skill helped him win 6-4, 6-0 against the 2000 born player who suffered an injury in the second set.

The second singles match saw another easy victory for Vietnam as its top tennis player Ly Hoang Nam trounced Zainal Abidin Muhd Ashaari 6-0, 6-1 after 49 minutes, thus helping his team take a 2-0 lead.

The ATP 457th ranked Ly Hoang Nam earned an easy win after 49 minutes.

Although the final win belonged to Vietnam after two consecutive victories in the singles matches, the final doubles clash proved dramatic. Vietnamese duo Pham Minh Tuan and Le Quoc Khanh needed three sets to beat the Malaysians.

In all three sets, the Vietnamese players did not begin well but knew how to overcome the difficulties they faced in the first and third set to win 7-6 (5), 4-6 and 6-4, after two hours and 11 minutes.

Winning all three group matches means Vietnam stay atop Pool A and will meet the runner-up of Pool B Qatar in the play-off tomorrow afternoon for a slot in Group II.
