Electric mini taxi model in central Viet Nam proves effectiveness

Just one year after its official launch, Viet Nam’s first electric mini taxi company, Let’s Go Taxi, has made a significant mark with 600 Wuling electric cars operating across four provinces and cities in the Central and Central Highlands regions. It has served more than 500,000 regular customers and created jobs for nearly 700 labourers.

The electric mini taxi business model, with fares equivalent to those of motorbike taxis (xe om), has sparked a “revolution” in the taxi passenger transport sector, particularly in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh Provinces.

This impressive success is attributed not only to an innovative business model but also to the strategic choice of vehicles: the Wuling Mini EV and Wuling Bingo electric cars.

Fifteen million kilometres without a fault

In early May 2024, Let’s Go Taxi was officially launched in Tuy Hoa City (Phu Yen Province), creating a stir in the passenger transport sector with fares starting from just 8,000 VND per kilometre. The four-seater Wuling Mini EV, operated by Let’s Go An Binh Joint Stock Company, is assembled and distributed in Viet Nam by TMT Motors. Despite having only two doors, the vehicle can accommodate 3 to 4 passengers.

In Phu Yen Province, during peak hours in the morning and late afternoon, demand for the Wuling Mini EV taxis often exceeds supply. Its customer base is diverse, including tourists, students going to school, and elderly people going for medical check-ups.

A group of four tourists who booked a taxi to Mui Dien and Ganh Da Dia (30–40 kilometres from the city) shared that a round-trip ride in an electric taxi, including a discounted return, cost around 500,000 VND. By comparison, a one-way ride using a motorbike taxi or ride-hailing app costs nearly 200,000 VND per person. The mini electric taxi was not only significantly cheaper but also provided air conditioning and shelter from unpredictable weather.

According to Tran Luu Van, General Director of Let’s Go An Binh JSC, as of April 2025, the entire fleet of Wuling Mini EV and Wuling Bingo vehicles had clocked more than 15 million kilometres without a single technical fault. This impressive figure demonstrates the durability and outstanding stability of Wuling’s electric mini-cars. Operating costs are also very economical, averaging just 250 VND per kilometre, much lower than that of conventional motorbikes.

Let’s Go’s fare for the Wuling Bingo is also about 8,000 VND per kilometre, less than half the cost of traditional taxis. This not only helps the company optimise operating costs but also makes its services increasingly attractive to customers.

Another advantage of the Wuling Mini EV and Bingo models, appreciated by drivers, is the convenience of charging. Both vehicles can be charged at home using a standard 220V outlet. With a 7kW charger provided by TMT Motors, charging time is reduced from 9 hours to just 4.5 hours, or just 30 minutes using fast-charging mode, which is enough to power the vehicle for an entire afternoon and evening. This flexibility allows drivers to recharge during lunch breaks, helping maintain their health and improve operational efficiency.

Driver Dinh Khac Thuat, operating taxi plate number 78H-020.53, said each full charge gives the car a range of 170 kilometres. The cost of charging is very affordable, and even for short trips, fares are comparable to motorbike taxis, making it suitable for a wide demographic. While early models lacked fast charging, this limitation has now been overcome, greatly improving drivers’ productivity.

A push for “green transport” industry

Beyond impressive performance and cost savings, Let’s Go Taxi is also making a positive contribution to greenhouse gas emission reduction. After one year in operation, the company has helped reduce more than 3,000 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to planting around 130,000 trees. This is a clear testament to the sustainability benefits that Wuling electric vehicles bring to both the community and the environment.

To meet rising demand, Let’s Go An Binh JSC has placed orders for a total of 1,000 Wuling electric vehicles (including 600 Mini EVs and 400 Bingos) to expand its operations into Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Dak Lak in 2025. However, company representatives say this still falls short of demand.

TMT Motors, the official distributor of Wuling in Viet Nam, has committed to delivering the vehicles on schedule and supporting Let’s Go in expanding operations to neighbouring provinces, to eventually roll out the low-cost electric mini taxi model nationwide.

According to Tran Luu Van, the budget-friendly electric mini taxi model, pioneered by Let’s Go in Viet Nam, has proven its effectiveness after just one year and has been well-received by consumers. The vehicle design is practical and simple, with vibrant colours. It runs smoothly and offers safety features comparable to other A-segment cars.

Building on these early achievements, Let’s Go An Binh is planning to expand its services to more cities and provinces during 2025–2026. To further promote green mobility, TMT Motors also plans to research and introduce small electric vehicle models for local assembly, priced at around 150 million VND each, with the capacity to carry three passengers.

Bui Quoc Cong, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at TMT Motors, said the company prioritised delivering around 150 vehicles in the first quarter to help Let’s Go expand its market in the South-Central coast and Central Highlands regions.

In 2022, the Prime Minister of Viet Nam approved the Action Programme on Green Energy Transition in the Transport Sector. According to the roadmap, from 2030 onwards, all newly replaced or newly invested taxis must run on electricity or green energy, encouraging transport companies to accelerate the switch to electric vehicles.
