Football: Medics who saved Eriksen at Euros to receive UEFA President's Award

The medical staff who saved Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen's life at the European Championship in June are set to receive the UEFA President's Award, Europe's soccer governing body said on Tuesday.

Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's opening defeat by Finland and received life-saving treatment on the pitch before he was rushed to hospital. Denmark's doctor and physio as well as the team captain Simon Kjaer, who started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Eriksen, are also being honoured.

* Matchday revenues across the five major European football leagues took a nearly EUR2 billion hit last season (US$2.35 billion) after spectators were largely barred from attending matches due to the pandemic, a report by consultancy KPMG said Tuesday (Aug 24).

* FIFA, world football's governing body, will receive over US$201 million in forfeited funds seized during a global football corruption probe, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), said on Tuesday (Aug 24). Since the DOJ unveiled the corruption probe in 2015, more than 50 defendants have been criminally charged. Twenty seven people and four corporate entities have pleaded guilty, and two people were convicted at trial.

* Real Madrid's Uruguay midfielder Federico Valverde has signed a contract extension to 2027, the Spanish club said on Tuesday. No financial details were given in Real's statement but media reports said the 23-year-old's new contract contained a EUR1 billion (US$1.18 billion) release clause.

* Ten-man Benfica held on for 0-0 draw at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday to reach the lucrative Champions League group stage with a 2-1 aggregate playoff win over the Dutch side after having defender Lucas Verissimo sent off in the first half. Swiss side Young Boys joined them after a 3-2 victory at Ferencvaros secured a 6-4 overall win against the Hungarians and Swedish champions Malmo followed in their footsteps despite a 2-1 loss at Bulgaria's Ludogorets as they qualified 3-2.

* Italian right back Davide Zappacosta has made a permanent switch from Chelsea to Atalanta, the two clubs said on Tuesday, with Italian media reporting the Serie A side paid a transfer fee of EUR10 million (US$12 million). Zappacosta, who joined Chelsea in 2017 for about EUR26 million, won the FA Cup and Europa League but found playing time hard to come by despite making 35 appearances in his debut season.

* Liverpool left back Andy Robertson has signed a new deal at the club until 2026 and will be available against Chelsea at the weekend after missing his side's opening two games of the season due to injury, the Scotland international said on Tuesday. Robertson has made 177 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Hull City in July 2017, winning the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup.

* The Czech national team will miss its star striker Patrik Schick in two World Cup qualifiers in September as the Euro 2020 joint top-scorer serves a ban for a red card. Schick, 25, who tied with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo at five goals at the Euro 2020, was sent off during a March qualifier which the Czechs lost 0-1 to Wales.

* Barcelona's youngest ever goalscorer Ansu Fati returned to group training on Tuesday (Aug 24) for the first time in more than nine months after a long injury saga, the club said.

* Southampton have signed 17-year-old left back Thierry Small from Everton on a three-year contract, the south coast Premier League club said on Tuesday. Small, a product of Everton's academy, last season became the Merseyside club's youngest ever senior player when he made his debut in the FA Cup fourth round at the age of 16.

* Real Madrid have made a €160 million (US$188.11 million) bid for Paris St Germain's France forward Kylian Mbappe, Spanish and French media reported on Tuesday. There was no immediate comment from either club.

* Norwich City thumped second-tier Bournemouth 6-0 in the League Cup second round on Tuesday (Aug 24) but some of their Premier League rivals lived dangerously before overcoming lowly opponents. Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace were the sole Premier League casualties of the evening, losing 1-0 in their all top-flight clash at Watford after Ashley Fletcher fired in a right-footed shot four minutes from time.
