Thang replaces Japanese trainer Toshiya Miura, who was sacked in late January following Vietnam’s poor performance at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar (losing all three matches to Jordan, Australia and the UAE).

Addressing the signing ceremony, Thang expressed his honour and pride at the appointment, hailing it as a significant milestone in his life. He also vowed to do his utmost to bring success to the two national teams.

Talking about the newly-appointed coach, VFF General Secretary Le Hoai Anh, who had directly negotiated with Thang for the post, applauded the former V-League manager as a competent, enthusiastic and responsible person.

The VFF would create the most favourable conditions for Thang to help him fulfil his envisaged assignments, Anh affirmed.

Thang’s first challenge in charge will be to join the national team to prepare for the remaining two matches of the 2018 World Cup Asian zone qualifying round against Chinese Taipei and Iraq on March 24 and 29 respectively.

Vietnam is currently standing third in Group F with four points after one win and a draw, six points behind leaders Thailand and one point behind the second-placed team, Iraq.
