A ceremony was held on October 24 to mark the French Development Agency (AFD)’s 30th anniversary in Viet Nam, recognising its contributions to the country’s socio-economic growth through numerous development assistance projects.

Over the past three decades, AFD has supported Viet Nam in its socio-economic transformation, from supporting agricultural production in the 1990s to industrialisation and infrastructure development in the 2000s.

During this period, AFD has committed more than 3.3 billion EUR in funding for 120 projects across Viet Nam, contributing to the nation’s development and improvement of people’s livelihoods.

Speaking at the ceremony, Olivier Brochet, the French Ambassador to Viet Nam, affirmed that numerous cooperation projects between the two countries have been implemented.

He added that AFD in Viet Nam is ready to strengthen its role as a trusted development partner in strategic areas of mutual interest.

Since 2019, AFD has worked with Viet Nam in its transition towards sustainable, resilient and low-carbon development, in line with Viet Nam’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and France’s global climate policy.

Through the “Team Europe” approach, which mobilises a group of European donors, AFD deploys its full range of financing instruments, including loans, grants, guarantees, technical assistance and partnership-building, to promote the green transition and social inclusion in Viet Nam.

Julien Seillan, AFD’s Country Director in Viet Nam, emphasised that the entire AFD Group takes pride in celebrating 30 years of partnership with Viet Nam. The country is undergoing a comprehensive transformation in areas such as science, technology, and energy.

He added that, in response to the demands of this new phase, AFD would continue to work with Viet Nam to jointly build sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking solutions for the next 30 years and beyond.

As it enters a new phase of cooperation with Viet Nam, AFD’s future strategy will focus on further supporting the country’s low-carbon and adaptive development pathway, helping Viet Nam achieve high-income status by 2045 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

The upcoming strategy will centre on three key pillars: sustainable energy, low-emission transport, and climate change adaptation.

The AFD Group is committed to supporting the implementation of France’s 500 million EUR contribution to the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Viet Nam, while also promoting sustainable transport solutions, climate-resilient urban development, flood prevention, and coastal erosion control.
