Hanoi dragon boat racing tournament kicks off

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation Day of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - 2024) and the 25th anniversary of Hanoi being recognised by UNESCO as a “City for Peace”, on October 13, at West Lake, Tay Ho District, Hanoi, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports coordinated with relevant units to launch the Hanoi Open Dragon Boat Racing Tournament in 2024.

In his opening speech, Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, Head of the Organising Committee Do Dinh Hong emphasised that dragon boat racing is a sport imbued with the cultural identity of the nation, demonstrating the strength, determination and solidarity of the Vietnamese people.

The event is not only a place for teams to compete, but also an opportunity to exchange, learn, and strengthen solidarity and friendship between localities, domestic and international organisations.

The organisers hope that the tournament will contribute to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values ​​of the nation while introducing and promoting the image of people and tourism of Hanoi — a friendly and hospitable city — to many international friends.

The 2024 Hanoi Open Dragon Boat Racing Tournament has gathered nearly 800 coaches and athletes from 48 dragon boat teams, including: 7 international dragon boat racing teams and international airlines; 8 teams of embassies and international organisations in Vietnam; 7 professional dragon boat teams from provinces and cities in the country; 8 dragon boat teams from clubs, organisations and enterprises in the capital and 18 male and female boat teams from districts, towns and cities in Hanoi.
