Hue City: projects crossing rivers and sea

Thua Thien Hue (now Hue City) - a land of ancient capital heritage with a rich history, culture, and beautiful nature - is surrounded by many rivers and vast Tam Giang Lagoon. Over the past 50 years, many historical and cultural projects crossing rivers and lagoon have been built in this land.

These projects not only contribute to completion of the inter-regional transport infrastructure system, but also promote socio-economic, tourism development and improve local people’s lives.

Two banks are no longer separated

The sea-crossing Thuan An Bridge - which started construction and has gradually been taking shape over the past nearly three years - has always been a topical issue in Hue. Nguyen Viet Ha, a fisherman in Hai Duong Commune (now Thuan An Ward) shared that the people of the two villages of Thai Duong Ha Thuong Giap and Thai Duong Ha Ha Giap were founded by the same lord. In 1909, the sea gate opened, separating the two banks. In the coming time, after Thuan An Bridge is completed, the two villages will become one again.

“The bridge will reduce the local people’s suffering, especially travel during storms,” shared Nguyen Thi Be from Thuan An Ward. Meanwhile, Nguyen Quy Suu from Thuan An Ward voiced their excitement: “When the bridge is completed, many tourism projects will surely be carried out, our children and grandchildren will change their jobs, taking tourists to visit the lagoon and the sea.”

After the Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025, contractors of the coastal road and Thuan An Bridge project in Thuan An Ward, Thuan Hoa District, have accelerated the construction progress to soon finish the project. It is expected that the bridge will be completed on April 30. At the construction site, there are more than 200 workers every day; the progress is very urgent.

The project of coastal road through Hue City and the Thuan An sea gate overpass in phase 1 has been under construction for three years with a total investment of 2.4 trillion VND, spanning a length of nearly 8km - starting from Tam Giang Bridge to the Thuan An sea gate overpass and ending at the intersection of National Highway 49A-49B in Thuan An Ward. The bridge across the Thuan An sea gate is about 2.36 km long and 20m wide, including four lanes; the main span is 218m long and 40m high. The project is invested by the Hue City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board.

According to Nguyen Dang Truong, Director of the Hue City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, the total allocated capital is more than 2.13 trillion VND, of which the disbursed capital is nearly 1.8 trillion VND. Currently, the last two main items of the project, the bridge piers of T27 and T26, are being urgently completed.

"After three years, the construction volume of the Thuan An sea gate overpass project has reached more than 90%. The construction units are making efforts to complete the bridge on April 30 and open it to technical traffic on September 2. After completion, the project will create a coastal tourist route in Hue City," he said.

Connecting central urban areas and inter-regions

Hue City is determined that construction and development on the basis of effectively exploiting and promoting the potentials and advantages of the city and the region, especially the harmonious combination of unique and diverse cultural and historical heritages with abundant landscapes and natural resources. Key projects in Hue City are being implemented synchronously in an effort to achieve completion by the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the city and national reunification, such as the Thuan An sea gate overpass, Nguyen Hoang Bridge crossing Huong River, and projects expanding and developing Hue urban areas.

In mid-March 2025, workers of the construction unit are urgently completing the final items of the Nguyen Hoang Bridge project connecting the two banks of Huong River between Kim Long Ward (Phu Xuan District) and Phuong Duc Ward (Thuan Hoa District).

Nguyen Hoang Bridge is main coloured bright yellow, and the decorative lighting system consists of 60 lamp posts of different heights installed on both sides of the bridge at the two ends of the bridge. These lamp posts are designed like a "royal golden parasol" made of electrostatically painted yellow galvanised steel; in which, the lowest lamp post is about 4.6m and the highest is more than 14m.

According to the Hue City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, which is the investor of the project, the bridge crossing Huong River will be opened to traffic and put into use on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation Day of the city on March 26, 2025, thus contributing to creating more highlights for Hue City and creating momentum for socio-economic, tourism and services development in the area.

“This is a special traffic project, with a unique architectural idea in the form of an arch and in harmony with the landscape, heritage and culture of Hue, therefore people are looking forward to it,” said Nguyen Van Manh, a resident of Phu Xuan District, Hue City.

After more than three years of construction, the Nguyen Hoang Bridge project, with an investment cost of more than 2.28 trillion VND, including over 1,855 billion VND is for phase 1 from the central and local budgets, has taken shape.

Hoang Hai Minh, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, said that Nguyen Hoang Bridge will contribute to completing the Ring Road 3 and the main traffic network, preventing congestion, reducing traffic on the National Highway 1A and routes through the centre of Hue City.

In addition to the main bridge serving to connect areas, there are also branches connecting the walking path along poetic Huong River. Tourists can walk along both banks of Huong River to go up the bridge to admire the scenery, take photos, and look at the river.

"When completed, the bridge crossing Huong River, with its ancient form typical of the capital Hue, will become a tourist highlight for the city, bringing many socio-economic values," Minh shared.

Hue City’s Department of Construction said that from 2024, the Provincial People's Committee (now Hue City) has decided to approve the investment in the bridge project crossing Tam Giang Lagoon, connecting Phu Da Town to Vinh Xuan Commune (Phu Vang District), with a total investment of more than 1 trillion VND from the state budget.

The 1.4km-long project is expected to start construction in 2026 and be completed in 2028, shortening the distance between coastal communes and the central area of ​​Hue City. This is the 6th bridge crossing the Tam Giang and Cau Hai lagoons, which will create momentum to attract investment, develop socio-economy as well as serve people's needs. In the future, there will be at least three more bridges crossing Tam Giang Lagoon.
