In Pictures: Islands in Truong Sa Special Administrative Zone hold early elections
The election of deputies to the National Assembly of Viet Nam (16th tenure) and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term on islands in the Truong Sa (Spratly) Special Zone was organised early on March 8, 2026. However, voters on Truong Sa Island will cast their ballots on March 15, the same day as citizens across the country.
Crossing hundreds of nautical miles, ballot boxes and election materials are safely transported and delivered to election teams stationed on the islands.
Despite being located hundreds of nautical miles from the mainland, every cadre, soldier, and resident in the special administrative zone fulfil their sacred right and duty to vote, contributing to the affirmation of national sovereignty over the Spratly Islands.
The Truong Sa Special Zone People’s Committee established six election committees with 54 members and 21 polling teams with 189 members, along with supporting subcommittees responsible for logistics, communication, security, complaint handling, and healthcare.
The chairman of the Truong Sa Special Zone People’s Committee hands over ballot boxes and election materials to the working delegation transporting them to the islands. Ballot boxes are carefully loaded onto ships for transport to island polling stations. Throughout the journey, the ballot boxes are preserved and inspected to ensure they are not damaged.
Commanders of island units pay close attention to disseminating information about the election among officers, soldiers, and residents. Even though the islands are far from the mainland, decorations and materials for the election are fully and carefully prepared. Officers and soldiers on the islands carefully study the candidates standing for election to the NA and People’s Council deputies. Lists of candidates are publicly posted in central and easily visible locations so that voters can conveniently observe, research, and learn about them.
Islands across the Truong Sa Special Zone successfully held the early election on March 8, 2026. Voters receive their ballots to participate in the election. Voters exercise their democratic right by casting their ballots. Voters complete the voting process.
