The event, jointly held by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV), the Foundation for East Sea Studies (FESS) and the Vietnam Lawyers Association (VLA), brings together 220 delegates, including close to 89 foreign scholars.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Vu Tung, Director of the Diplomatic Academy, said that the international conference on the East Sea, after 10 years of organising, had contributed to raising awareness among policymakers and the public on the East Sea issue.
He expressed his hope that the experts and scholars continue to make suggestions to promote understanding and cooperation in the East Sea in the spirit of the principles of international law.
Addressing the event, Judge Kriangsak Kittichairasee, from ITLOS International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, praised the significance of the international conference. He said that the series of international conferences on the East Sea, over the past 10 years, has become a forum for experts and scholars to exchange and seek initiatives, which help the governments of the countries concerned to coordinate with one another to improve security and common development in the East Sea.
Previously, on November 7, at an event welcoming the delegates to the conference, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung emphasised the need to maintain a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the East Sea based in the spirit of the principles of international law. This is the responsibility not only of coastal countries but also of all the countries concerned, he added.
At the workshop, 32 presentations will be presented. In particular, the situation in the East Sea and the dynamics of the countries in the past 10 years will be discussed and evaluated comprehensively.
The conference runs until November 9.
