Sharing his memories of the Great Spring Victory of 1975, Ninh Viet Thong, Vice Chairman of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Bangkok and Surrounding Areas, said that although 50 years have passed, he still vividly remembers how he and other OVs in Thailand were deeply moved and excited upon hearing the news about the April 30 victory.

“Everyone was happy because we knew that from then on, our country was unified and independent,” he stated.

At the time, Thong was 20 years old and teaching Vietnamese to the expatriate community in Northeast Thailand, which helped him learn much about the Vietnamese people's resistance and the victory of April 30, 1975.

He stressed that the OVs in Thailand are very proud of the historic victory and want to make further contributions to the motherland.

“It was like a dream come true. A dream of independence and peace for Vietnam,” he said.

Recounting his unforgettable memories of April 30, 1975, Nguyen Van Hoa, an OV in Pathum Thani Province, said when he heard that Vietnamese soldiers had entered Saigon and taken over the Independence Palace, he was overjoyed and indescribably happy.

“At that moment, all the expatriates cheered together when we heard the news of victory; everyone was delighted,” he recalled.

On the night of April 30, 1975, none of Vietnamese in Thailand could sleep because we were so excited. We were all proud that Vietnam had achieved peace and become a unified nation,” he added.
