The team recovered one set of martyrs’ remains in Nhu Le residential quarter and a mass grave containing two sets of remains in the Tri Buu area on August 25 and 26.
In Nhu Le residential quarter, the remains were found at a depth of about 0.8 metres, still wrapped in a military poncho and tied with communications wire. Although the bones had deteriorated, the teeth remained intact enough for samples to be collected for DNA testing. Associated artefacts included the poncho, communications wire and buttons.
At the Tri Buu site, the search team discovered a collective grave in a bunker, which had been disturbed by bombing and covered with bricks and rubble. The remains found at the site included bone fragments, shin bones, feet and teeth.
Based on the condition of the remains, the quantity of bones and the artefacts found, the authorities determined that the site was a mass grave containing two sets of martyrs’ remains, whose resting place had been disturbed by bombing.
The Quang Tri provincial Military Command said that, as of August 27, Team 584 had recovered a total of 20 sets of martyrs’ remains in Quang Tri Ward.
Team 584 is coordinating with relevant agencies to expand the search for martyrs’ remains in areas across Quang Tri Ward.
