The IJF announced the latest world rankings in all weight classes on May 30, which worked to decide the top 22 men and top 14 women from each division who would directly qualify for the Games. Each national Olympic committee (NOC) is subject to a limit of 1 judoka per weight division.
If an NOC contains more than a single male athlete ranked in the top 22 and a single female in the top 14 of the world ranking list, the NOC can decide which of their athletes obtain the quota places.
The women’s 48kg event features 22 Olympic berths, including one for host Brazil, 14 for top-14 athletes and the remaining seven allocated to five continents (two for Europe, one for Africa, one for America, two for Asia and one for Oceania).
Van Ngoc Tu sat 44th with 238 points in the world rankings announced on Monday, which was enough to make her one of the two additional Olympians of Asia, alongside Kim Sol-mi from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
This is the second consecutive time Tu has made it through to the world’s largest sporting event, after her Olympic debut in London four years ago.
With Tu’s success, Vietnam has booked 19 Rio Olympic berths so far: two in badminton, one in rowing, one in swimming, two in shooting, three in fencing, one in athletics, two in wrestling, two in gymnastics, four in weightlifting and one in judo.
