Ky Son is a border district with 19 extremely difficult communes. The population of the district consists of 5 ethnic groups including Mong, Kho Mu, Thai, Kinh and Hoa (ethnic Chinese).
Ky Son High School was established in 1967, with 95% of ethnic minority students from 21 communes and towns throughout the district. The roads to school are very rough and dangerous, especially in the rainy season when storms, floods and landslides often occur.
The new school was built on an area of about 26,000 square metres, with a total investment of 210 billion VND. It consists of 245 rooms, including 45 classrooms, 25 function rooms, 126 boarding rooms for students and 45 boarding rooms for teachers.
