NA Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong inspects post-flood recovery efforts in Dien Bien

According to the report from Dien Bien Province, from the beginning of the year until July 21, the province has been affected by 24 natural disasters, including cold spells, severe cold, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, flash floods, and landslides, causing significant damage to both humans and property.

Highlighting the damage caused by the residual effects of Typhoon No.2, he noted that out of the 24 natural disasters occurring in Dien Bien, 22 happened from the beginning of the year until July 21. Since July 22, there have been two additional events, with the most severe being the flash flood in Muong Pone Commune (Dien Bien District) that occurred on the night of July 24 and the early morning of July 25, resulting in 7 deaths, several people missing, and many others injured.

Addressing the meeting, NA Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong conveyed the condolences and sympathy from the NA Chairman, the NA Vice Chairpersons, the members of the National Assembly Standing Committee, and the National Assembly agencies to the locals in Dien Bien Province who have suffered severe damage from Typhoon No. 2 (in July 2024).

The Vice Chairman expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the soldiers and the families who have lost loved ones, those who were injured, gone missing, or suffered losses of homes and property.

Based on the inspection of the disaster recovery in Huoi Leng Commune (Muong Cha District) and Muong Pone Commune (Dien Bien District), the Vice Chairman praised the proactive and positive efforts of Dien Bien authorities along with the support from philanthropists and the community’s spirit of mutual aid.

NA Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong emphasised that Dien Bien must not be complacent, as the risk of landslides, flash floods, and other disasters is real during the rainy season.

According to the Vice Chairman, the most important goal for Dien Bien is to stabilise the situation as quickly as possible, address localised transportation disruptions, especially in remote, border areas, and restore normal activities.

It is essential to ensure the supply of food, medicine, and medical care, repair of damaged homes, cleaning up the environment, and safe conditions for students to return to school and for people and businesses to resume production.

The Vice Chairman particularly urged Dien Bien to prioritise accurate weather forecasting and make timely and effective responses.

Additionally, authorities should strengthen road inspections and patrols to promptly detect and report damage, and coordinate closely with Dien Bien's provincial and district leaders to implement support policies for stabilising residents' lives, especially for vulnerable groups and poor households.
