Under the programme, three new conservation areas for endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles will be established in Quang Ngai province’s Binh Son district, Hanoi’s Son Tay town, and Phu Yen province’s Dong Hoa and Tay Hoa districts.
Two sea turtle rescue stations will also be set up in the provinces of Ba Ria – Vung Tau and Khanh Hoa.
The programme aims to protect and promote the sustainable development of Vietnam's endangered turtle populations and their habitats, contributing to the conservation of Vietnam's biodiversity.
The programme is also expected to complete the legal document system to create a legal basis for the conservation of endangered turtles while enhancing public awareness and participation in the conservation of endangered turtles.
In addition to effectively managing conservation areas and rescue stations for endangered turtles, research and evaluation activities regarding endangered turtles should be improved.
At the same time, population restoration projects for a number of species of endangered and rare tortoises and freshwater turtles will be implemented in Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Thua Thien – Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa.
