The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on December 21 released the top 10 events in the sector for 2024, highlighting key achievements and challenges in resource management, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

1. Strengthened the Party’s leadership and participation of the entire political system for sustainable development and carbon neutrality goals

The Politburo’s Conclusion No. 81-KL/TW, dated June 4, 2024, emphasises the importance of managing resources sustainably, combating climate change, and transitioning to a low-carbon and green economy. This includes achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

2. 2024 Land Law Passed

The new Land Law aims to streamline land management, decentralise authority, and improve land use efficiency, becoming a crucial lever for national development.

3. First geology and mineral law enacted

The 2024 Law on Geology and Minerals integrates long-term resource management, balancing economic, social, and environmental interests while promoting sustainable extraction practices.

4. National marine spatial planning released

The first-ever national marine spatial plan focuses on developing a sustainable, modern maritime economy, reinforcing Vietnam’s commitment to marine environmental protection.

5. Water resource scenarios developed

For the first time, water scenarios for the Red River and Mekong River basins were developed, aiding in better water resource management and climate adaptation.

7. Discovery of rare species

Vietnam discovered 112 new rare species, emphasising its growing role in global biodiversity conservation and the need for proactive environmental protection.

8. Enhanced communication on environmental policies

Extensive public outreach on environmental laws raised awareness and fostered greater engagement in policy enforcement involving all levels of government.

9. Booming data sharing for sustainable development

Over 20.5 million data transactions were shared, facilitating the digital transformation of environmental management across the country.

10. Severe impact of Typhoon No. 3

Despite early warnings, Typhoon Yagi caused significant damage, highlighting the growing challenges of climate change and the importance of disaster preparedness.
