With the theme “Globalisation 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” WEF Davos 2019 is expected to attract around 3,000 delegates, aiming to exchange views on how to intensify cooperation and dialogue to address geopolitical issues, boost the reform of global institutional frameworks to adapt to new political and socio-economic situations, and form new institutional frameworks and regulations to foster global collaboration in different aspects.
The WEF is a prestigious and effective global forum that attracts numerous countries around the world to join with the common goal of addressing global urgent issues.
This overarching goal has helped the WEF to open a channel for relations along with a bilateral and multilateral forum, attracting the participation of leaders of major countries, international organisations and leading corporations around the world to share the vision and propose actions for the common prosperity of the globe. The most important WEF event is the annual meeting held at the end of January every year in Davos, Switzerland. In addition to that are regional forums: typically, the WEF Tianjin (or Dalian) in China, the WEF on ASEAN (before 2016, WEF on East Asia), on India, on Latin America and on the Middle East and North Africa, aiming to exchange and evaluate regional development issues.
Since joining the WEF in 1989, the relationship between Vietnam and the organisation has developed rapidly in various aspects. The relationship has been marked by high-level visits and exchanges between the two parties. WEF Managing Director Philipp Rosler visited Vietnam continuously over three years in 2014, 2015 and 2016. High-ranking Vietnamese leaders have regularly attended the WEF Davos and WEF on ASEAN. Bilateral contact between Vietnamese leaders and those from other countries around the world, as well as leaders of global corporations, offers an opportunity to discuss the development direction of the Vietnamese economy, contributing to policy and guideline development for Vietnam.
In addition to attending WEF events, Vietnam and the WEF have extended their cooperation to various fields, such as improving national competitiveness and cooperation in industry and agriculture. Vietnam has always actively and effectively participated in WEF initiatives, such as "New Vision for Agriculture", " Grow Asia", " Green Growth Action Alliance" and " Shaping the Future of Production".
Vietnam and the WEF have coordinated to successfully organise multiple WEF events in the region. In 2010, Vietnam hosted the WEF on East Asia in Ho Chi Minh City, attracting about 450 participants. Vietnam also launched the initiative and successfully organised the WEF - Mekong meeting, in Hanoi on October 2016, to promote the Greater Mekong sub-region to the world's leading corporations.
In September 2018, the country hosted the WEF on ASEAN in Hanoi. The WEF founding chairman evaluated that the 2018 WEF on ASEAN was the most successful held in 27 years of organising the regional WEF meeting. Accordingly, the content of the conference was suitable for ASEAN countries and Vietnam in the context that all countries must rise in the fourth Industrial Revolution.
Notably, in recent years, Vietnamese enterprises have gradually begun participating in the WEF activities. Vietnam currently has 10 large corporations and companies that are members of the WEF. They have taken advantage of joining the WEF to build cooperative networks, exchange business development experiences, and contribute to the global economic system.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s attendance at the 2019 WEF Annual Meeting will contribute to promoting Vietnam's achievements in socio-economic development and international integration in 2018, while helping convey the message of major Vietnamese Government orientations, policies and measures on its socio-economic development in 2019.
Accordingly, Vietnam is determined to build a government of action that nurtures development, improves the investment and business environment and promotes innovation, creativity and productivity, thereby promoting partners and leading corporations to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam, contributing to strengthening an international environment favourable for facilitating the implementation of Vietnam’s socio-economic development targets in 2019.
May the visit and attendance of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to the WEF Davos 2019 be a success, contributing to strengthening the close relationship between Vietnam and the WEF.
