The visit marks an important external political activity of the Vietnamese and Cambodian National Assemblies. This is the first foreign visit by Samdech Khuon Sudary as National Assembly President since Cambodia held its 7th-tenure National Assembly election and elected the new leadership.
Continuously nurtured by the generations of leaders and people of both countries, the Vietnam-Cambodia relationship is increasingly strengthened and developed under the motto of good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive and long-term cooperation. The political relationship plays the core role guiding overall cooperation between the two countries.
Recently, the two sides have stepped up delegation exchange at all levels. This is clearly seen through high-level meetings between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), visits and phone talks between senior leaders of the two Parties and countries, as well as between the two countries’ ministries, agencies, and localities. The committees of the two parties, as well as the two countries’ state agencies, fronts, social organisations, people’s organisations and localities, have worked hard to renovate the cooperation method.
As an important pillar in Vietnam-Cambodia relations, defence and security cooperation has been advanced to become closer and more effective. The two sides continue to implement a protocol on defence cooperation for the 2020-2024 period as well as their annual cooperation plans.
Cooperation in the fields of economics, culture, social affairs, and science and technology has witnessed new developments. The two sides are actively implementing the agreements reached at the 20th meeting of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Commission on Economic, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation and the outcomes of the 12th conference on cooperation and development between Vietnam and Cambodia’s border provinces.
Furthermore, cooperation in education-training, tourism, and people-to-people exchange continues to be promoted. Importance is attached to relations between the provinces that share the same border, especially in border villages and communes, thus helping to promptly address arising issues.
The achievements recorded by the two countries have important contributions of legislative bodies. Continuing to be strengthened both bilaterally and multilaterally, the relationship between the Vietnamese National Assembly and Cambodia’s National Assembly and Senate helps to deepen the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries in a more substantive manner.
Cooperation between the two countries’ legislative bodies is implemented synchronously and effectively. The two sides carry out delegation exchanges at all levels with the aim to share their experience and expertise in the legislative field, in addition to supervision and making decisions on national important matters. The two sides agree to enhance coordination and urge and supervise ministries, agencies, localities and enterprises to ensure the implementation of agreements signed by the two countries.
At regional and international inter-parliamentary forums, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), the two countries’ National Assembly delegations have enhanced exchange and consultation as well as coordinated stances on issues of shared concern. The two countries’ legislative bodies are working closely to prepare for the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Parliamentary Summit.
Taking place amidst the stable development of Vietnam-Cambodia relations in recent times, Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary’s visit aims to strengthen trust and bond between the two Parties, two States and two National Assemblies. The visit is an opportunity for the two sides to discuss results of recent cooperation and orientations to promote bilateral relations in the new period.
Affording a cordial welcome to president of the Cambodian National Assembly, Vietnam affirms the Party and State’s consistent policy of always attaching importance and giving top priority to consolidating and developing relations with Cambodia, especially between the two National Assemblies. This also continues to show Vietnam’s support for Cambodia and the CPP in the cause of national construction and development.
May Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary’s visit to Vietnam be a great success, helping to deepen Vietnam-Cambodia relations towards becoming more substantive and effective in all fields, including the parliamentary channel, thus bringing substantive benefits to both countries’ people and contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.
