The 735m long and 48m wide bridge contains six main and four auxiliary lanes linking districts 2 and 9 with Thu Duc district.

Built at a total cost of VND1 trillion (US$48 million), the bridge was completed five months ahead of schedule.

According to Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan, the Rach Chiec bridge will help ease traffic congestion on the Hanoi Highway and enhance economic activities between HCMC and southeastern provinces.

On the same day, work began on the first steel flyover in HCMC at the Thu Duc intersection.

The flyover, which will be 570 meters long, 6 meters wide and have four lanes, will cost VND227 billion (US$10.9 million) and is scheduled to be completed in early 2013.

HCMC also plans to build two more flyovers at the Hang Xanh intersection and the Hoang Van Thu – Truong Son – Cong Hoa roundabout.
