The VFF leader made the request at a symposium on ‘Protecting the environment in Hanoi with a vision to 2025’ held on November 24 by the Hanoi Police Department, the Hanoi Fatherland Front Committee, the city Buddhist Sangha, the Hanoi Archdiocese and the Evangelical Church of Vietnam (North).

He pointed out that with a population of nearly 8 million, environmental pollution has become a pressing issue facing the authorities and people of Hanoi.

As every citizen is a source of pollutant discharge and contributor to the conditions of the environment, citizens must be provided with straightforward instructions on discharges of pollutants and make efforts in reducing pollution, he stressed.

He called on the five organisers of the symposium to increase supervision functions and work out detailed action plans for a green environment in the capital.

According to Chairman of Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, Hanoi has set a long-term target to improve the living quality of people and promote the image of a green, clean and modern capital city.

The city is preparing to install an additional 10 air-monitoring stations in early December, and is striving to increase the number to 50 by 2017. It is also set to plant 200,000 new trees each year to reach its ambitious target to become the city of a million trees by 2020.

City authorities have also attached great priority to developing a green economy by using green energy, ensuring clean water supply, and improving household solid waste management.

Over 50 speeches at the symposium comprehensively reviewed the environmental status in Hanoi, the role of environmental protection in the city’s sustainable development as well as the current Party guidelines, State laws and policies and resolutions and decrees of relevant ministries and sectors relating the issue.

They also proposed solutions and suggestions to increase the efficiency of protecting the environment over the years to come.
