Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang named acting head of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha

The Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang has been appointed as acting Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), replacing the Most Venerable Thich Pho Tue who passed away last October.

The appointment ceremony took place on December 31, at a conference of the VBS’s Executive Council for the 2017-2022 tenure.

The naming of Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang as the highest leader of Vietnamese Buddhism, received the full support of Buddhist representatives from 63 provinces and cities.

The Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang was born in 1940 and was ordained as a novice monk at the young age of 10, under the guidance of the late Most Venerable Thich Tri Duc.

In 1960 he was ordained as a Bhikkhu of the Lam Te school, and then studied at the An Quang Temple in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) and Rissho University in Japan.

He has been editor-in-chief of Giac Ngo newspaper since 1989 and held various posts in the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.

The Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang is a prolific preacher of Buddhist teachings, with dozens of books published throughout Vietnam.
