Viet Nam joins hands to help typhoon-affected people rebuild lives

In an ongoing effort to assist people in recovering from the devastating impact of super Typhoon Yagi (Storm No. 3), which made landfall in northern Viet Nam in September 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with international organisations, has launched support programmes to aid those affected by the natural disaster.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, together with international partners, has implemented several post-disaster recovery programmes. These include direct cash transfers to households, housing reconstruction through repairs and new builds for families whose homes were damaged or destroyed, and livelihood restoration by providing seeds, agricultural supplies, and support to cooperatives.

On May 8, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep, alongside officials from the Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control, in coordination with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and local authorities, organised a cash distribution ceremony in Tan Huong Commune, Yen Binh District, Yen Bai Province.

The aid package was intended to help families who suffered severe losses from the storm and flooding to quickly regain stability. Eligible households had to meet one or more criteria such as being classified as poor, having elderly members, children in school, or having lost homes or agricultural land.

A total of 67 households received assistance, with amounts ranging from 2.1 million VND to 3.5 million VND depending on household size. The total value of the distribution exceeded 212 million VND.

Additionally, with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing an emergency aid package worth 1 million USD across the provinces of Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Thai Nguyen. As of April 2025, UNDP distributed cash to 940 households (equivalent to 3,950 individuals), helping them overcome hardship and stabilise their lives.

The programme also provided technical consultancy and supervision for the construction of 39 new homes and repairs to 84 storm-damaged houses. Public infrastructure such as village roads, bridges, and schools were also upgraded, strengthening local disaster resilience.

Typhoon Yagi caused severe damage in 26 northern provinces, leaving 345 people dead or missing, damaging over 283,000 houses, and resulting in an estimated economic loss of 81.801 trillion VND.

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, the international community pledged over 22 million USD to help Viet Nam recover from the disaster. The Department of Dike Management and Disaster Prevention and Control has coordinated with international organisations to implement this aid, with a focus on emergency relief, housing reconstruction, and livelihood recovery.
