The northern mountainous Lao Cai province lacks schools with many temporary classrooms in poor condition. The National Fund for Vietnamese Children (NFVC) has co-operated with the provincial Fund for Child Protection to survey and mobilise support from My Phuc (Eva de Eva) Company to build the main campus for Lo Su Thang school in Coc Cang hamlet, Din Chin commune.
Total funding for the campus with six 30m2 classrooms is VND1 billion (US$44,000). The facility is expected to meet the basic needs of the main school, providing a safe environment and better learning conditions for up to 100 children.
Lo Su Thang school has a total of five campuses in Lo Su Thang, Coc Cang, Na Co, Mao Sao Chai and Sin A Chai hamlets, with a total of 20 classes and 204 students mainly from Hmong and Nung ethnic groups and ranging from Grades 1 to 5.
All classrooms are in a precarious condition, made of bamboo and thatch. Some are borrowed classrooms from local houses and a kindergarten nearby. The auxiliary works, including bathrooms, toilets, and a kitchen, are not yet available. Teachers’ accommodations are also in a temporary condition.
The school needs the joint support of relevant authorities, donors and civil societies.
Supporting construction of schools and dormitories is one of the core programmes of the NFVC. Since 2008, the Fund has supported the building of 70 facilities, with a total of nearly VND30 billion (US$1.32 million).
