Gymnasts bag three more gold medals for Vietnam

The gymnastics team added three gold medals to Vietnam’s SEA Games tally on August 23 after Le Thanh Tung and Dinh Phuong Thanh performed exceptionally in the men’s vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar events.

With two jumps marked with 14.4 and 14.5 points, Tung successfully defended his vault title with an average of 14.45 points, 0.1 points more than the silver medalist, Agus Prayoko of Indonesia, and 0.5 points above bronze medal winner, Capellan, of the Philippines.

He then went on to raise his gold medal count in Kuala Lumpur to three by winning the horizontal bar discipline with 13.35 points. Earlier on August 20, Tung joined his teammates to claim the men’s team title.

Inspired by Tung’s success, Dinh Phuong Thanh produced an extraordinary performance on the parallel bars, securing another gold medal for Vietnam with 14.9 points – his second title in Kuala Lumpur.

Vietnamese gymnasts also brought home two additional silver medals thanks to Pham Phuoc Hung on the parallel bars with 14.15 points and Dinh Phuong Thanh in the horizontal bar discipline with 13.05 points.

Cyclist Nguyen Thi That managed to secure Vietnam’s fourth gold of the day, finishing first in the women’s 104km individual mass start event.

This is That’s second gold medal won at this year’s SEA Games, following the first title claimed in the criterium (seven laps measuring 35km) category.

As of 12.30 today, Vietnam is standing at third with 20 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze medals, behind Malaysia with 41 golds, 33 silver and 23 bronzes, and Singapore with 20 golds, 20 silvers and 19 bronzes.
