Vietnamese futsal targets a World Cup place in 2020

At a press conference in Hanoi on January 2, Tran Anh Tu, Chairman of the Vietnam Professional Football JSC (VPF) said that Vietnamese futsal has set a goal of finishing among the top five teams at the upcoming 2020 AFC Championship to secure a place in the FIFA Futsal World Cup later this year.

2020 promises to be a busy year for the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) as the men’s and women’s football teams will attend many important tournaments, at both the regional and continental levels.

Attention will also be paid to the Vietnam futsal team who are going to compete in the AFC Championship in February with the mission of hunting for a World Cup spot.

Amid concerns about the team’s results following the farewell of Spanish coach Miguel Rodrigo, Tu emphasised his trust in the capabilities of domestic coach Pham Minh Giang. This will be the first time in history that Vietnamese futsal has their eyes on a World Cup spot without the leadership of a foreign coach.

“Coach Pham Minh Giang is quite capable of leading the Vietnam futsal team in the time ahead,” Tu, a member of the AFC’s futsal department, affirmed.

The VPF chairman stressed the need to consider whether to hire a foreign coach as this could bring unexpected risks. He stated that the VFF has received a number of offers for the position of head coach of the national futsal team, with five foreign candidates.

“It will be great to hire a qualified coach as Bruno Garcia, but if the chosen one is similar to Miguel Rodrigo, we are not really satisfied. Actually, Miguel did not live up to our expectations, so his departure was not something shocking to us. I believe that coach Pham Minh Giang will perform well the job well, even in a long term,” Tu said.

In February, the Vietnam futsal team will leave for Turkmenistan for the 2020 AFC Championship. Giang’s troops target a top-five finish in the tournament to qualify for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup, scheduled for September 12 to October 4.
