Wu denies Barca derby win at Espanyol

La Liga leaders Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw at struggling Espanyol on Saturday as China striker Wu Lei came off the bench to grab a late equaliser in a pulsating city derby.

Ernesto Valverde’s side had to play the final 15 minutes with 10 men after De Jong was dismissed for a second booking and substitute Wu took advantage for La Liga’s bottom side with a powerful finish. Barca still top the standings on goal difference after 19 games but they are level on points with second-placed Real Madrid, who beat Getafe 3-0 earlier on Saturday.

* Venezuelan Rafael Dudamel was given a two-year contract to coach Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro on Saturday, two days after he resigned as head of Venezuela's national team. Dudamel, who becomes the 12th foreign manager to take charge of the Belo Horizonte side, coached Venezuela for almost four years and worked with the country’s Under-20 and Under-17 sides.

* Atletico Madrid made it three La Liga wins in a row by beating Levante 2-1 at home on Saturday to climb up to third in the standings following an action-packed game in which three goals were scored in the space of five minutes. The victory took Atletico onto 35 points after 19 games, level with fourth-placed Sevilla who were held 1-1 at home to Athletic Bilbao on Friday.

* Holders Manchester City began their assault on the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory over fourth-tier Port Vale but Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers face an unwanted replay after drawing 0-0 at Molineux on Saturday. Leicester City, second in the Premier League, beat Wigan Athletic 2-0, Bournemouth beat Luton Town 4-0 and Portsmouth won 2-1 at Fleetwood in the day's other late kickoffs.

* World number one Rafa Nadal overcame a temporary blip on his way to victory at the ATP Cup on Saturday, shortly after Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic survived a tough battle against fit-again South African Kevin Anderson. The US$15 million (£11.46 million) ATP Cup, which features 24 nations competing in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney over 10 days, is a solid platform for the world's top players to prepare for this month's Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne from Jan. 20.

* Former Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been appointed the new coach of Guangzhou R&F for the upcoming season, the Chinese Super League club announced on Saturday. The ex-Barcelona, Arsenal and Netherlands full back replaces Dragan Stojkovic, who left the club by mutual consent on Friday.

* Udinese striker Felipe Vizeu has joined Brazil's Athletico Paranaense on loan, the Italian Serie A club said on Saturday. The 22-year-old will be tied to the Curitiba-based side until December 31 this year, read a statement on Udinese's official website.

* Bayern Munich's latest transfer might be a coup from an economic point of view as 23-year-old Alexander Nuebel joins the Bavarian side without any charge from Schalke 04. As the goalie's contract with the Royal Blues is running out next summer, he signed a five-year contract with the ruling German Champion until 2025.

* Tottenham Hotspur's England striker Harry Kane suffered a torn hamstring, the north London club has revealed. Kane, 26, limped off 15 minutes from time during Spurs' 1-0 loss to Southampton on Wednesday. The club confirmed that the striker suffered a tear in his left hamstring during the Premier League fixture and saying that their medical staff will continue to review the injury with treatment ongoing.
