* The Italian football season will resume with the final stages of the Coppa Italia knockout cup before Serie A gets under way on June 20, following a vote by the 20 top-tier clubs on Friday. Serie A said in a statement that the "the sporting activity of the 2019/2020 season will resume firstly with the Coppa Italia" with the final to be played on June 17.
* Bayer Leverkusen secured a scrappy 1-0 Bundesliga victory at Freiburg on Friday, bouncing back from a midweek setback to win with an opportunist goal by forward Kai Havertz. The result lifted Bayer, who were hammered 4-1 by VfL Wolfsburg at home on Tuesday, two places up to third on 56 points from 29 games, eight behind champions and leaders Bayern Munich who entertain Fortuna Duesseldorf on Saturday.
* Red Star Belgrade clinched their third successive and a record-extending 31st league title with a 5-0 win at city rivals Rad on Friday as Serbia's first division resumed after it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March. With three rounds of matches remaining, Red Star have 72 points from 27 games, 14 more than closest rivals Partizan Belgrade who are at home to Mladost Lucani on Saturday.
* The Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada said on Friday it had decided to cancel its 2020 season due to border restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic that also requires mandatory quarantines for those entering the country. The tour for up-and-coming players, which is owned and operated by the PGA Tour, had planned to hold a record 13 events this year across Canada.
* A late penalty gave Slask Wroclaw a 1-1 draw at home Rakow Czestochowa and took them up to second place as Poland's Ekstraklasa league resumed after the coronavirus stoppage on Friday. In a second game played on Friday, Zaglebie Lubin scored three times in the first half as they won 3-0 at Pogon Szczecin.
* Cricket West Indies has given its approval in principle for a test series in England, the body said on Friday. West Indies had been scheduled to visit England for three tests in June but the tour was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The England and Wales Cricket Board is now looking at hosting the series in July.
* Roger Federer is the world's highest-paid athlete for 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic knocked soccer's Lionel Messi off top spot, according to the annual Forbes list released on Friday. The Swiss tennis great, owner of a men's record 20 Grand Slam singles titles, earned US$106.3 million in the last 12 months, including US$100 million via endorsements, to move up four places and become the first player from his sport to top the list.
* Spanish soccer's top-flight will resume after a three-month pause due to the coronavirus pandemic on Jun 11 with the local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis, the government's department for sport said in a statement on Friday. Meanwhile, president Javier Tebas has outlined La Liga' plans to offer viewers the chance to hear virtual crowd noise during the matches, which will be played without supporters to prevent further spread of the virus.
* Formula One would be the winner if double world champion Fernando Alonso makes a comeback next year at the age of 39, according to the Spaniard's former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali. Alonso left McLaren at the end of 2018 but has been linked, in media speculation at least, to what will be a vacant seat at Renault in 2021 after the departure of Australian Daniel Ricciardo.
* Borussia Dortmund's prolific teenage striker Erling Haaland will miss their next Bundesliga match at Paderborn while Mo Dahoud has been ruled out for the rest of the season just as he was finding his form, coach Lucien Favre said Friday. Haaland, who has scored 10 goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances since his move from Salzburg in January, has a knee problem while Dahoud as an "unspecified knee injury", Favre told reporters ahead of Sunday's game away to the Bundesliga's bottom-placed side.
* Renault will stay in Formula One, interim Chief Executive Coltilde Delbos said on Friday after announcing the carmaker's restructuring measures including plans to cut 15,000 jobs worldwide.
* Williams announced the end of the Formula One team's title sponsorship with ROKiT on Friday but hoped to bring in new money to replace it. The struggling team had extended only last July the contract with the company, whose business interests range from mobile phones to beer and vodka brands, to the end of 2023.
* Andy Murray will make his return to tennis at a behind-closed-doors tournament organised by his brother Jamie from Jun 23-28 in London, the Lawn Tennis Association said on Friday.
* The FA Cup final will be held on Aug 1, the Football Association announced on Friday, after the Premier League said on Thursday that its season will restart on Jun 17. The quarter-finals of the FA Cup will be held over the weekend of Jun 27-28, with the semi-finals earmarked for the weekend of Jul 18-19.
* This year's British and Australian MotoGP races have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers said on Friday. The British Grand Prix was scheduled for Silverstone on Aug. 30 while the Australian round had been due at Phillip Island on Oct. 25.
