Tennis: French Open to allow 11,500 fans per day between the three showcourts

The French Open will allow a maximum of 11,500 spectators per day to adhere to strict health protocols and curb the spread of COVID-19 when the Grand Slam begins later this month, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) said on Monday (Sep 7).

The French Open, traditionally held in May-June, was postponed earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now be held at Roland Garros from Sep 27-Oct 11.

* Second seed Dominic Thiem edged a first-set tiebreak before turning up the heat to romp into the US Open quarter-finals with a resounding 7-6(4) 6-1 6-1 victory over Canadian youngster Felix Augur-Aliassime at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday (Sep 7).

* Third seed Serena Williams advanced to the US Open quarter-finals after a gritty, tension-filled 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 win over Greece's Maria Sakkari on Monday (Sep 7).

* Former champion Naomi Osaka was at her free-swinging best as she stormed into the US Open quarter-finals with a 6-3 6-4 win over Anett Kontaveit on Sunday.

* Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez and defender Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League club announced on Monday (Sep 7).

* Callum Wilson on Monday (Sep 7) completed his move to Premier League club Newcastle from relegated Bournemouth for a reported fee of £20 million (US$26 million). The 28-year-old England forward has signed a four-year deal with Steve Bruce's side.

* Everton have signed midfielder James Rodriguez from La Liga champions Real Madrid on a two-year contract, the Premier League club said on Monday, as the Colombian bids to revive his career in England. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed but British media reported that Everton paid around 20 million pounds for the 29-year-old who had a year left on his contract with the Spanish side.

* Barcelona captain Lionel Messi reported for training on Monday (Sep 7) for the first time since requesting to leave the club last month.

* The draw for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France has been moved to Dec 14 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament's chief executive, Claude Atcher, said on Monday. It was originally set for Nov 30 but has been postponed until after the Rugby Championship, which has been rescheduled due to the Covid-19 outbreak and is set to be completed on Dec 12, to take into account country seedings from that competition.

* Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of France's Nations League game against World Cup runners-up Croatia on Tuesday (Sep 8) after testing positive for COVID-19, national team management said Monday.

* Italy returned to winning ways as Nicolo Barella's header just before halftime secured a 1-0 victory away to a below-par Netherlands in their Nations League clash at an empty Johan Cruyff Arena on Monday (Sep 7).

* Scotland's Ryan Christie netted a second-half penalty to secure a 2-1 win in the Nations League on Monday away to a Czech side featuring nine players making their international debuts due to novel coronavirus concerns that forced wholesale changes.

* Norway beat Northern Ireland 5-1 in their Nations League match on Monday (Sep 7) with Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland leading the charge with two goals and an assist in Belfast on Monday.

* Belgium defender Brandon Mechele has tested positive for COVID-19, the Belgian FA said on Monday (Sep 7), while an official said that more than half the players in the under-17 squad had been infected during a trip to Germany.

* World number one Dustin Johnson capped a two-under-par 68 with a birdie at the last to seal a three-stroke victory in the US PGA Tour Championship and earn the US$15 million FedEx Cup playoff title on Monday (Sep 7). Johnson finished with a 21-under-par total at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta - three shots clear of Americans Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas.
