Swimming: Dressel earning comparisons to Phelps at world championships

Caeleb Dressel is already earning comparisons to the great Michael Phelps and the best is yet to come, the 22-year-old from Florida said after winning three more events at the world championships on Saturday. Dressel took his tally at the meet to six gold medals and has a chance to make it seven on Sunday.

* The US set a world record of three minutes and 19.40 seconds in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay final at the world championships on Saturday. The quartet of Caeleb Dressel, Zach Apple, Mallory Comerford and Simone Manuel helped the US better their own world record of 3:19.60 set en route to the 2017 world title in Budapest.

* Alex de Minaur outlasted big-serving American Reilly Opelka 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-3 on Saturday to reach the final of the Atlanta Open for the first time.

* No. 4 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili saved two match points and ousted second-seeded Alexander Zverev in three sets Saturday to reach the final of the Hamburg European Open.

* Tom Watson will make his final Senior British Open appearance on Sunday, he announced after the third round at Royal Lytham & St. Annes on Saturday. Watson, whose five Open championship victories put him just one shy of Harry Vardon's record, also said he had played his last US Senior Open.

* Diego Costa scored four goals as Real Madrid were embarrassed 7-3 by rivals Atletico Madrid in the final match of their United States tour in New Jersey on Friday.

* Shayna Jack, who withdrew from the Australia team ahead of the world swimming championships, said she had tested positive for a banned substance on Saturday.

* Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel will start his home German Grand Prix at the back of the grid after failing to set a time in qualifying on Saturday. Ferrari said the four-times Formula One world champion's car had suffered a turbo-related problem.

* Charles Leclerc completed a practice clean sweep for Ferrari on Saturday with a scorching lap in the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Formula One German Grand Prix.

* Mick Schumacher completed an emotional three-lap demonstration run in his father Michael's championship-winning Ferrari F2004 car on Saturday (Jul 27) before qualifying at the German Grand Prix.

* Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde is confident new signing Antoine Griezmann will have no problems linking up with strike partners Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez when the trio finally appear in the same team together.

* Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen was announced on Saturday as the fourth former Barcelona player to sign for Japanese side Vissel Kobe. The 33-year-old joins former Barca players Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Sergi Samper at the club, who are currently 15th in the 18-team J.League.
