Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports of Viet Nam Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet emphasised that the spirit of this year’s conference goes beyond evaluating the results of the ASEAN Action Plan on Sports for the 2021-2025 period, aiming to expand sports cooperation associated with economics, science, and technology, in order to contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the region.
Accordingly, member countries agreed to consider sports as a key factor in promoting human capacity and strengthening community bonds, especially in the post-pandemic context, when the need for physical and mental health, and the values of solidarity and sharing, are increasingly emphasised.
SOMS 16 is scheduled to run until October 15, and is considered an an important preparation step for the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS 8), taking place from October 15-17 in Ha Noi, where Ministers are expected to adopt strategic directions for ASEAN sports cooperation in the next decade.
