Nguyen Thi Khanh Ly sealed the victory with a direct scoring serve, helping Viet Nam win 15-8, 15-4 at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Gymnasium in Aichi, Japan.
After six consecutive days, sepak takraw finally ended Viet Nam’s wait for another gold medal. It was the country’s first ASIAD gold in the women’s doubles event since the 2006 Games in Doha, Qatar.
Viet Nam started with Nguyen Thi Thu Trang and Nguyen Thi Khanh Ly, with Le Thi Hong Lien as a substitute.
Khanh Ly played a key role with powerful and accurate attacks, while Thu Trang provided solid defence.
Viet Nam dominated the first set 15-8 before cruising to a 15-4 victory in the second. Khanh Ly was particularly impressive, scoring repeatedly with attacks at the net and a well-placed short serve to close out the match.
The road to the final was not straightforward, as Viet Nam lost 1-2 to Laos in the group stage before beating Malaysia and Myanmar 2-0. They then defeated the Republic of Korea 2-0 in the semi-finals.
This was Viet Nam’s second gold medal at ASIAD 2026. The first came in women’s team kata in karate on September 22.
Viet Nam is participating in ASIAD 2026 with 348 athletes competing in 33 sports and disciplines, targeting at least four gold medals. The country has now achieved half of that target, with further medal opportunities in sepak takraw and kurash.
