Viet Nam wins first gold medal at Asian Para Games 2026

On the afternoon of October 21, at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium Aquatic Centre, Viet Nam’s para swimming team celebrated a major success as Do Thanh Hai and Le Tien Dat claimed the top two places in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB5 final, securing the first gold medal for the Vietnamese para sports delegation.

The victory by the two swimmers marks a strong return for Vietnamese para swimming on the continental stage.

In the men’s 100m breaststroke SB5, Do Thanh Hai touched the wall first in 1 minute 33.91 seconds to win the gold medal. His teammate Le Tien Dat followed in 1 minute 36.63 seconds to claim silver. Their convincing performancesainst strong rivals at the Games.

The result was also particularly meaningful as Do Thanh Hai and Le Tien Dat had both achieved strong results in the same event at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023.

Alongside the medal success, Viet Nam’s female swimmers also delivered notable performances, with Vi Thi Hang having competed in two finals.

In the women’s 50m butterfly S7, she clocked 41.17 seconds to finish fourth, behind athletes from Japan, Hong Kong (China), and China. In the women’s 50m freestyle, which combined the S7 and S8 classifications, Hang again finished fourth with a time of 37.39 seconds. China’s Zhu Hui, Japan’s Mizukami Mai, and Malaysia’s Lim Carmen took the top three places, respectively.

At the 13th ASEAN Para Games earlier in 2026, Hang won four gold medals and broke a Games record, underlining her standing with impressive performances. The races in Nagoya continue to provide her with an opportunity to test herself against the continent’s leading athletes.

In the women’s 100m breaststroke SB5, Trinh Thi Bich Nhu finished in 1 minute 51.31 seconds, placing fourth behind three Chinese swimmers. Although the result fell just short of a medal, the determination shown by the 41-year-old swimmer remains highly commendable.

Concluding Viet Nam’s swimming finals for the day, Vo Thanh Tung competed in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB4. The veteran swimmer recorded a time of 2 minutes 03.59 seconds, finishing fifth behind athletes from Malaysia, Kazakhstan, India, and Saudi Arabia.

Although he was unable to win a medal, Thanh Tung made every effort to complete his race amid fierce competition at the continental event. On the third day of competition, Viet Nam’s para swimming team contested five finals, featuring Vo Thanh Tung, Vi Thi Hang, Trinh Thi Bich Nhu, Le Tien Dat, and Do Thanh Hai.

The highlight was the men’s 100m breaststroke SB5, in which two Vietnamese swimmers shared the top two steps of the podium. The result marks an important milestone for the Vietnamese delegation at the Games and provides the athletes added confidence for the competitions ahead.
