The opening ceremony was attended by Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, IOC President Kirsty Coventry, Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, and representatives from the participating delegations.
The ceremony marked the official start of the Games, which will run until October 4 in Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani emphasised Japan’s role in hosting international sporting events, particularly during difficult times.
He said Japan had demonstrated its resilience, hospitality and commitment when it hosted the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, an event that had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The opening ceremony took place at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, featuring artistic performances, music, light shows and fireworks conveying a message of connection and harmony among Asian cultures.
The ceremony combined traditional Japanese cultural elements with modern technology, including performances showcasing the culture and distinctive features of Aichi Prefecture.
A highlight of the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games was the parade of sports delegations and the lighting of the Games cauldron, bringing to a close a torch relay that lasted nearly a month.
The 2026 Asian Games will run until October 4, featuring 43 sports. According to the Games schedule, some events began before the opening ceremony, with the first medals expected to be awarded on September 20.
The Vietnamese delegation comprises 498 members, including 348 athletes competing in 33 sports, and aims to win at least four gold medals.
