The National Steering Committee for Civil Defence on July 3 issued an urgent official dispatch urging northern localities, ministries and agencies to take proactive response to tropical storm Maysak, the first of its kind to enter the East Sea/South China Sea this year, and subsequent floods, as it is forecast to bring heavy rain and widespread impacts across the northern region.

Upon receiving news of the unusual natural disaster that caused severe flooding and landslides across several areas of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, leaving hundreds dead or missing, President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on November 30 sent messages of condolences to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Floods triggered by torrential rains and landslides from November 16 night have battered the central region, leaving at least 14 people dead or missing, according to the Viet Nam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Between the night of November 17 and 19, the North will also experience rain. The combination of rain and strong cold air will cause a sharp drop in temperatures across the northern region and the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh.

The central city of Hue has so far received over 329 billion VND (over 12.5 million USD) from the central budget, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF)'s agencies, and other localities to support flood recovery efforts, according to the municipal Civil Defence Command.

Torrential rain and rising floods are affecting the central region, particularly Hue and Da Nang cities, where river levels continue to surge, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Storm Fengshen, the 12th in the East Sea/South China Sea this year, has maintained its intensity and path, and is forecast to trigger torrential rains of 200–400mm and even 500mm from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai in central Viet Nam, according to National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

A joint rescue and disaster response rehearsal among the armed forces of Viet Nam, Laos, and Cambodia took place in Vientiane on October 15, to strengthen coordination and operational readiness in response to floods, landslides, and building collapse.

Heavy rain may occur in certain places in the northeastern and north-central regions on October 13 afternoon and night, posing risks of flash floods, landslides, and inundation, said the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHF).

The circulation of Typhoon Matmo have unleashed catastrophic flooding and landslides across northern Viet Nam, claiming three lives, leaving four missing, and submerging nearly 10,000 hectares of paddies and crops.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on October 7 issued an official dispatch, requesting concerted measures to effectively respond to and control floods, flash floods, and landslides in northern localities following prolonged heavy rains brought by Typhoon Matmo.

Localities were directed to deploy forces to guard flooded and landslide-prone areas, restrict traffic in unsafe zones, and prevent fatalities caused by negligence.

The meteorological agency warned that all the 124 communes and wards across the province face a very high risk of flash floods along small rivers and streams, landslides in steep terrain and areas with weak geological structures, as well as flooding in low-lying and urban areas.

Provinces in the northern region are ramping up emergency measures as Typhoon Matmo, the 11th storm to hit the East Sea this year, continues to strengthen on its way towards the mainland.

Typhoon Bualoi, the 10th storm to appear in the East Sea/South China Sea this year, together with its circulation, has left 194 people dead, missing, or injured and caused an estimated economic loss of about 8.78 trillion VND (332.51 million USD).

Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu, accompanied by a central working delegation, visited the central province of Ha Tinh on September 30 to encourage local people and support recovery efforts following Typhoon Bualoi.

Super Typhoon Ragasa continues to intensify as it approaches the East Sea/South China Sea, bringing powerful winds, towering waves, and warnings of flash floods and landslides in northern mountainous provinces of Viet Nam.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has instructed military and police forces to maintain a high level of readiness and actively engage in efforts to address consequences of Typhoon Kajiki, which made landfall in central Vietnam on late August 25 afternoon, with priority given to schools, healthcare facilities, policy beneficiaries, and low-income groups.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed off a dispatch directing the settlement of Typhoon Kajiki’s consequences as the storm has wreaked havoc on the northern part of central Viet Nam.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has requested ministries, agencies, and localities to urgently address the severe aftermath of recent natural disasters, restore normal life for affected communities, and ensure that students are ready for the new academic year.
