High-tech marine aquaculture not only helps Viet Nam tap its marine potential more effectively and open up a new development pathway, but also makes an important contribution to the strategy to combat IUU fishing, protect the environment, and improve the livelihoods of coastal farmers and fishers. A reporter from Nhan Dan Newspaper spoke with Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Huu Dung, President of the Viet Nam Marine Aquaculture Association.

Viet Nam’s long coastline, together with its numerous islands, bays and lagoons, provides favourable conditions for developing diverse forms of aquaculture. Today, many cooperatives and coastal communities are applying new technologies in marine farming, helping to improve productivity, product quality and household income.

Viet Nam holds significant advantages in marine aquaculture, yet this economic sector has so far developed below its potential. One of the key reasons for this situation is the slow and insufficiently coordinated application of science and technology.

With a long coastline, favourable natural conditions, and abundant marine resources, Viet Nam possesses a significant advantage in marine aquaculture. In recent years, the Government has introduced various policies aimed at removing bottlenecks and fully leveraging this potential, with the goal of developing a modern and sustainable marine aquaculture sector.
