Top two seeds Djokovic, Thiem ousted in Vienna Open quarters

World number one Novak Djokovic and US Open champion Dominic Thiem crashed out of the Vienna Open in the quarter-finals on Friday (Oct 30), with both top seeds beaten in straight sets by Lorenzo Sonego and Andrey Rublev respectively.

Djokovic, who had a 39-2 record this year, failed to convert a single break point in a 6-2 6-1 loss while Sonego broke the Serb five times for the biggest win of his career. Earlier, Russian Rublev ousted defending champion Thiem 7-6(5) 6-2, firing 30 winners and saving both break points he faced.

* Wolverhampton Wanderers moved up to third in the Premier League after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on Friday thanks to goals from on-loan teenage wingback Rayan Ait-Nouri and Daniel Podence. The win puts Wolves on 13 points from seven games. They trail leaders Everton and second-placed Liverpool on goal difference. Palace are ninth on 10 points.

* Paris St Germain's Brazil forward Neymar will be sidelined until after the international break in mid-November following his injury against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, the French club's coach Thomas Tuchel said on Friday. Neymar came off with a thigh muscle problem in the 26th minute of Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Turkish side.

* Schalke 04 had to settle for a 1-1 draw against visitors VfB Stuttgart on Friday after leading for the first time this season and have now gone 22 Bundesliga games without a win. Stuttgart move up to fourth place on nine points while Schalke are 17th with two after six games.

* Promoted Cadiz scored two goals in three minutes to beat hosts Eibar 2-0 on Friday and provisionally join La Liga leaders Real Sociedad at the top of the table. Goals from Alvaro Negredo in the 36th minute and Salvador Sanchez Ponce three minutes later put the visitors on 14 points from eight games, with Sociedad ahead on goal difference and with a game in hand at Celta Vigo on Sunday.

* Australia's bid for the 2027 Rugby World Cup got a boost on Saturday with an additional AUS$8.8 million in funding from the federal government as part of its wider efforts for post-coronavirus economic recovery.

* Two-time World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe and 11-time WNBA All-Star Sue Bird are getting hitched. The sports power couple announced their engagement with a photo posted to Bird's Instagram account on Friday and a representative for Rapinoe confirmed the news to Reuters, as congratulations for the couple poured in from across social media.

* Belgium have been forced to move their three soccer internationals in November from Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium to nearby Leuven because of COVID-19 restrictions. The friendly against Switzerland on Nov 11 plus Nations League matches versus England on Nov. 15 and Denmark on Nov 18 will now be played at Den Dreef in Leuven, some 30km from the Belgian capital.

* Chris Gayle may have missed out on yet another Twenty20 ton on Friday when he was dismissed for 99 but he wrote his name into the history books when he became the first player to smash 1,000 T20 sixes. The fearless, free-scoring West Indies batsman, 41, is the only player to amass more than 13,000 T20 runs in little over 400 matches.

* Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has recovered from a COVID-19 infection, the Serie A club said on Friday. The 35-year-old has missed one Portugal match and four Juventus games, including their Champions League clash with Barcelona, since he tested positive on Oct. 13.

* The Racing Point Formula One team have had seven positive cases of COVID-19 this season, including both their drivers and team owner, principal Otmar Szafnauer said on Friday. Mexican Sergio Perez, who missed two races in August, and Canadian Lance Stroll, who was ruled out of the Eifel GP at the Nuerburgring this month, are the only drivers to have contracted the virus since the season started in Austria in July.

* The African Champions League final and remaining semi-final have been postponed to new dates and the final moved from Cameroon to Alexandria in Egypt, the Confederation of African Football said on Friday. The twice postponed semi-final second leg between Zamalek of Egypt and Morocco’s Raja Casablanca will now be played on Nov. 4, which has caused the final to be pushed back by three weeks to Nov. 27.

* Primoz Roglic produced a brilliant finish to claim an unlikely victory on stage 10 at the Vuelta a Espana on Friday and move back into the race leader's jersey. The 185km flat route from Castro Urdiales to Suances had been earmarked as one for the sprinters. However, the Slovenian showed fantastic timing to launch away from the main group inside the final 100 metres of the uphill finish in Cantabria on Spain's northern coast.

* Pep Guardiola said on Friday that he has no plans to leave Manchester City and return to Barcelona after the Spanish club's presidential candidate Victor Font stated he wanted to bring him back to the Camp Nou.

* Diego Maradona celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday with tributes from around the world and a 100-metre long billboard being erected in his honour in the centre of Buenos Aires. However, the Gimnasia y Esgrima coach is expected to spend a quiet day at home and could miss the restart of the Argentine league due to fears about COVID-19.

* Confederation of African Football president Ahmad Ahmad has become the latest senior global football figure to test positive for COVID-19 days after his FIFA counterpart Gianni Infantino. Infantino made a similar revelation on Tuesday and is self-isolating for 10 days, FIFA has confirmed.

* Williams confirmed on Friday that Britain's George Russell and Canadian Nicholas Latifi will continue to race for them next year, ending speculation linking the Formula One team to Mexican Sergio Perez.

* Bayern Munich defender David Alaba's future at the European champions is in doubt, coach Hansi Flick said on Friday, with months-long contract talks having made no progress towards a new deal. The 28-year-old Austria international has been at Bayern since his youth days in 2008 and has been a key defender for many years, with his current deal running out in 2021.

* Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk has undergone knee surgery after he damaged knee ligaments in the Merseyside derby against Everton earlier this month, the Premier League club said on Friday. Van Dijk was injured early in the 2-2 draw when he was at the receiving end of a reckless challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, which left Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp fuming.

* West Ham United forward Michail Antonio will miss Saturday's Premier League clash with champions Liverpool after failing to recover from a hamstring injury, manager David Moyes said on Friday. Antonio was taken off in the 52nd minute of their 1-1 draw with Manchester City last time out and also appeared to struggle with the problem in their 3-3 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.
