Vietnam attends 2012 World Chess Olympiad

Nhan Dan Online – Vietnam is taking part in the 40th World Chess Olympiad 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey from August 28 to September 9.

The Vietnamese team consists of ten members: Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Nguyen Van Huy, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Le Kieu Thien Kim, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Pham Thi Bich Ngoc and Hoang Thi Nhu Y.

Olympiad 2012 witnesses a record number of 158 participating teams competing in the open section (men’s) and 131 teams in the women’s category, including many world’s leading chess teams such as Russia, Ukraine, China and India.

Vietnam is placed 28th in the men’s side and 27th in the women’s section with respective average elo ratings of 2589 and 2265.

The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament in which teams from all over the world compete against each other. At the 38th Olympiad in Germany four years ago, Vietnam finished among the world’s top ten for the first time ever in the men’s team category.
