The team ran away with 14 rapid and blitz championship titles before earning seven gold medals in the standard chess category yesterday to wrap up this year’s event with absolute victory.
World U-10 champion Nguyen Anh Khoi lived up to expectation as he continually surged past many strong rivals in the region to take home two gold medals in the men’s U-12 rapid and U-16 standard disciplines.
The Philippines came in second with eight gold, ten silver and eight bronze, trailed by third place finisher Singapore with six gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
The championship, which transpired in Chiang Mai on June 5-13, drew the participation of 386 competitors representing seven Southeast Asian countries and eight invitees including China, India, Russia, Iran, Hong Kong (China), Bangladesh, Mongolia and Taiwan (China).
Competitors pushed for men’s and women’s standard, rapid and blitz titles in U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, U20 and U50+ age groups.
