Do Xuan Quang, chairman of the VLA and the ASEAN Federation of Forwarders Association, said the index had been developed based on the experiences of other countries, so it is expected to provide helpful information on this high-potential market.
The data represent the basis for creating information standards within the Vietnamese logistics industry, he noted.
According to Dang Vu Thanh, director of the VIL, the logistics index will yield up-to-date information and provide investors with a new perspective on listed logistics companies.
The logistics industry has played an increasingly important role in international integration and economic development, accounting for 20.9% of the nation’s GDP.
There are currently around 1,200 enterprises in Vietnam that provide logistics services, the majority of whom focus on freight forwarding, warehousing, loading and transport agents and are mostly small- and medium-sized enterprises.
Meanwhile, 25 multinational logistics companies operating in the country control 70-80 percent of market share in the logistics sector. For this reason, VLA Chairman Quang believes the establishment of the index is an important milestone in the development strategy for this service industry.
