Vietnamese heritages honoured through traditional handicraft materials

Vietnamese designer La Pham (Pham Ngoc Anh) has unveiled her latest collection, “Eternal River”, at New York Fashion Week 2026 (NYFW). The collection celebrates Vietnamese heritages through traditional handicraft materials while embracing practical applications suited to the rhythm of modern life.

Drawing inspiration from the rivers deeply rooted in her memories - from her childhood by the Red River to her years living in Europe by Switzerland’s Aare and Limmat rivers - La Pham deftly translates the essence of water into her designs: soft yet resilient, constantly renewing and evolving, mirroring the endless cycles of nature and life.

With a colour palette evoking the flow of rivers, fluid tailoring and rippling motifs, the collection exudes a free-spirited yet graceful energy - at once gentle and vibrant.

It explores the richness of silk in various forms, from fluid drapes to structured shapes, from lustrous finishes to rustic textures. Particularly striking is the unexpected pairing of silk and brocade - two seemingly contrasting materials - which creates a unique effect: refined yet powerful, modern yet primal.

For La Pham, fashion is more than clothing; it is a medium for storytelling. “The story I bring to New York this time is about freedom - expressing memories and the perpetual flow of life, reflected in each design,” she emphasised.

With “Eternal River”, La Pham once again asserts her identity by weaving Vietnamese materials into her work and championing a philosophy of sustainable fashion. The collection incorporates Bao Loc silk, Pa Co beeswax brocade, Nga Son water hyacinth handbags, alongside natural fabrics and recycled fabric jewellery. Traditional craftsmanship intertwines with contemporary design thinking to create a harmonious beauty - at once liberating and steeped in Vietnamese cultural depth.

Sustainability has always been the core of La Pham’s fashion ethos. After over 20 years living and working in environmental research in Switzerland, she returned to Viet Nam in 2016 to establish the La Pham brand.

Her brand not only honours national cultural heritage but also promotes environmental protection and supports local artisans in traditional craft villages, paving a sustainable path that helps preserve heritage and bring Vietnamese cultural values to the world.

Appearing at New York Fashion Week 2026 marks La Pham’s third time showcasing at one of the world’s four fashion capitals. Previously, she has made her international mark as the first Vietnamese brand to join the sustainable fashion programme UN-DRESS in Switzerland in 2022, as well as showing at renowned fashion weeks in Paris and London and appearing at numerous other international events.
